Review of Away We Go (2009) by Justin L — 06 Mar 2010
The most memorable thing from this film is the fantastic soundtrack that I will inevitably purchase as soon as I've written this, which in itself shows the dis-interest I had with the movie itself. That's not to say the film was dreadful, far from it, however Sam Mendes first foray into the indie realm was a slow and boring affair. A character drama with bland characters and very little going on, it's all rather pointless. This did slightly remind me of Sideways but without that films excellent script, or class. John Karsinski and Maya Rudolph were fine as the two leads, however I think it's Jeff Daniels who clearly steals the film in the five minutes he's on screen. There are some laugh out loud moments but too few to comment on.
A wasted opportunity, perhaps Mr Mendes wanted to switch the brain off.
And direct a simple story before moving onto greater and more intruiging material- who knows? I'm just hoping that's the case...
