Review of Away We Go (2009) by Adam K — 22 Mar 2010
This funny, heartworming film from Sam Mendes may be his most personal film to date. It has its flaws -mainly the scenes with Maggie Gyllenhaal, which feels as its from a much different and more contrived film - but the stunning photography, exquisite soundtrack, solid script, and especially the acting lift this film up from its familiar setting.
I was really suprised and very impressed with Maya Rudolph in this film. Like many of you, I was only familiar with her through her Saturday Night Live work. I was floored after watching this film and I hope this leads to many years of rich, great roles.
Seriously, she gives easily the most underrated performance of the year and frankly, it may be my favorite performance by an actress from 2009 - well, at least neck and neck with Gabby Sidibe's work in Precious.
