Director Sam Mendes takes a break from his slick, stylish dramas for this more stripped-down effort, which is easily his weakest. An overlong exercise in unconvincing, over-engineered tenderness that masquerades as an offbeat indie flick by heaping on the forced quirkiness.
Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski are surprisingly decent in the leads (I've never been a fan of their TV work), but the supporting cast - though full of incredibly talented actors - is made up of shrill, annoying caricatures.
Dull and annoying.
