Review of Away We Go (2009) by Ryan P — 10 Jun 2010
In 'Away We Go', a wonderfully acted and scripted film helmed by Sam Mendes, we meet our two main characters, a couple (played by John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph) who are expecting a child and trying to find a 'home' to raise her.
In each potential location (Phoenix, Tempe, Madison, Montreal, etc.) the movie introduces odd, interesting, and often funny characters, played by some prominent actors such as Jeff Daniels, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Allison Janney, and Catherine O'Hara.
The movie kind of gets stuck in this formula - the rather ordinary couple travels to a new place, meets some noticeably quirky residents of that city, and proceeds to move on to the next one. But quite frankly, it's such a joy to take a trip with the stellar Krasinski and Rudolph and get lost in the zany character interactions that it is hardly a complaint.
Although the ending is a bit overly sentimental and predictable, it wraps things up nicely and I certainly would recommend 'Away We Go'. Despite its faults, it's a fun, relatable movie that is quirky and bold yet lowkey and confident at the same time.
