Review of Away We Go (2009) by Ash H — 14 Jun 2010
I didn't connect much with this film. It almost feels like it should have been the debut feature for a director as accomplished as Sam Mendes, whose actual debut, American Beauty, is significantly better in every way.
John Krasinsky has likeabilty coming out of his ears, but I've yet to see him in a big screen role that really utlizes his talents. I found him here to be a bit of bumbling fool - yes, his relationship with girlfriend Maya Rudolph (whose casting baffles me) was unique and at times charming, but he didn't hold the movie together.
The two of them trek across the country visiting friends and relatives, trying to find a place to settle down for when their baby arrives. It's a road movie but with cliche indie leanings; most of the characters they meet along the way, Alison Janney especially, are forced charicatures whose quirks just scream 'look at us, this is just like Juno!' But, if you look at the cover, you can kind of tell the movie was going for that.
