Review of Away We Go (2009) by Peter V — 07 Aug 2010
Some might argue it's a bit of a patchwork road movie, and that it's not nearly as sharp or cutting as American Beauty (also directed by Sam Mendes) but the collection of oddball middle Americans characters we meet along the way are up there with the best I've seen.
Keep an eye out for a hilarious cameo from Maggie Gyllenhaall as an annoying lecturing hippy mom. Also a heartfelt movie and makes some real points about expectation, so-called destiny and the drudge of life that some directors would want to hammer us over the head with.
Mendes has a great light touch - and the performances of the two leads, John Krasinski (who deserves to be an indie star, a la Mark Ruffalo) and Maya Rudolph are outstanding.
