Review of Away We Go (2009) by Brandi W — 08 Oct 2010
John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph play Burt and Verona, a couple about to have a baby. After Burt's parents (Jeff Daniels and Catherine O'Hara) decide to move to Belgium a month before the baby's due, Burt and Verona decide they need to do their own thing too.
They plan trips across the country and Canada to figure out where they want to raise their child.
While visiting friends and family members on these trips, they start to open their eyes more to what they do and don't want to be as parents.
The first half of the movie is a bit dry and slow; but, it kicks in about ten minutes before the halfway mark.
The casting is excellent. There are extended cameos by Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jim Gaffigan, Melanie Lynskey (Rose from Two And A Half Men), and Allison Janney.
Outside of the profanity, the movie doesn't really deserve an R rating.
The writing, overall, is good. Sam Mendes does a very good job at directing this.
Definitely one to add to your dvd queue.
Movie warnings: Profanity, way post-infant breast feeding (no nudity), and plenty of parenting and pre-parenting angst.
Where Jerry Maguire has "You had me at hello.", Away We Go has "I will love you, even if I can't find your vagina.".
Enjoy!
