Review of Away We Go (2009) by Mark A — 25 Nov 2010

This was a surprisingly sweet little "road trip" for Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph), a yuppie couple expecting their first child. This viewer enjoyed the relationship these two exhibited as they traveled about the country seeking the best place to raise their family, and the interaction with the various friends and relatives that they visit in the process.

The characters are sometimes over the top crazy (see Allison Janney and Maggie Gyllenhaal) and sometimes just a little off, but each new encounter brings something different into the mix. The scenery was apparently shot completely in Connecticut, yet we feel as if we are in Phoenix, Tuscon, Madison, Montreal, Miami and the final stop in the home Verona grew up in.

This moves slowly, and the humor sometimes left one feeling uncomfortable, but the overall effect worked for this viewer. One begins to understand their need to find a safe place to nest and maybe envies the fact that these two have the luxury of having portable jobs they can do anywhere.

A road film and a relationship film in a low-key comedy format combine to make this a four star effort.
