Review of Away We Go (2009) by Kenneth L — 19 Dec 2010
It's a nice little movie with some funny moments and decent acting, but not a whole lot else. It has good dialogue and wholeheartedly embraces the indie movie aesthetic, which made sense when I saw that the movie was cowritten by Dave Eggers and his wife.
Indie characters, indie music, indie everything. It's about a couple in their early 30s trying to figure out a good place for their expected baby to grow up in. The best part of the film is undoubtedly Maya Rudolph, giving a surprisingly good dramatic performance for someone I only knew from Saturday Night Live.
John Krasinski is playing pretty much the same likable, goofy guy he usually does. There is one amusing scene with Jeff Daniels, and an unexpectedly funny performance from Maggie Gyllenhaal. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just not exactly an ambitious movie.
