Review of Away from Her (2007) by Joel M — 13 Apr 2008
I have to watch depressing movies. it's in my bones. I have to see sad things happen on-screen. this movie is about alziehmer's disease and how it slowly consumes Fiona's thoughts as her husband puts her in a homecare network.
while there something happens that really made the film extremely interesting. I just knew that it was about the disease, but when the movie started moving in the unique direction of: after placing her in the homecare, after a month of not visiting her (it's a rule), she slowly forgets about her husband and falls in love with another sufferer of alziehmer's at the home.
the husband sees this as he visits her everyday, but she looks so happy with her new 'boyfriend/friend'. does he love her enough to just let her be? now that is an interesting subject to make a movie out of.
i'm frightened to death about alziehmer's, forgetting what you remembered, people, places, days, nights, everything fading away like a darkening cloud. but instead of just focusing on this, there's a bit of humanity in the story that makes it easier to swallow and easier to get you thinking.
