Review of Away from Her (2007) by Hugo S — 21 Apr 2008
AWAY FROM HER (2007).
Directed by Sarah Polley.
Starring Gordon Pinsent, Julie Christie, Olympia Dukakis«I think I may be beginning to disappear.»In Memento, Leonard likes to remind us what is situation is. In Away From Her, Fiona stop knowing what hers is and the words are never spoken. Actress-turned-director Sarah Polley believes the audience is smart enough to understand what goes on pretty quickly without having to explain anything.Away From Her is a poignant drama about a man seeing his wife's situation deterioring as she is being consumed by Alzheimer's disease. It could have been melodramatic but Polley handles her topic to perfection, its very well-written. It moves slowly but it makes everything even more touching as it goes on.Julie Christie gives a great performance as Fiona and Gordon Pinsent is simply heartbreaking as her husband.Away From Her doesnt have a complex plot, I dont think it even has one - kind of - but its an important film about everlasting love and coping with a relative's illness. Its moving and ultimately tragic but realistic. Beautifully shot.
