Review of Away from Her (2007) by Stephanie P — 18 May 2008
This is a good movie for Sarah Polley's first time out in the director's chair, but I didn't love it as much as I had hoped. Polley's amateur status shows in the awkward editing and too obvious use of symbolism.
I know it's meant to be the winter of Fiona''s life, but must it be winter for months on end? There were also too many gaps in story information to make it plausible -- Do Grant & Fiona really have no children or other family to speak of, and if so why not? Plus why would he put Fiona into a nursing home in Brantford when they live in Lake of Bays? Isn't that at least a four hour drive? You see -- it left me with too many questions & not in the soul-searching way I expected.
On the positive side, Julie Christie is as beautiful as ever & she & Gordon Pinsent & Olympia Dukakis all put in the great acting jobs you would expect.
