Review of Awakenings (1990) by Brian S — 19 Jan 2012
Kind of dry, actually. Robert De Niro gives a fantastic performance, but everyone else (shockingly including Robin Williams) is pretty forgettable. the story's interesting, but it's delivered in a very contrived "this is supposed to be inspirational and life-affirming" kind of way.
it's not so bad that it makes the film corny, but for whatever reason the emotions of the writing didn't seem natural. overall an entertaining and a generally feel-good kind of movie, I think it's just one of those that tries too hard to achieve something it easily could have done anyways.
