Review of Awake (2007) by Faeza Y — 07 Jun 2009
Awake is a straight up thriller which injects suspense wherever possible and provides you with a story that will keep you guessing the whole film.
Things I liked about Awake:
It touches on a subject I had no idea existed (anesthetic awareness) and turns it into a pretty scary situation where a man gets heart surgery and 'appears' asleep but can feel the pain, the conversation around him, pretty much everything. Too bad the doctors have no idea. It is through this situation that Clay (played pretty well by Christensen) becomes aware of what he has gotten himself into and the deception that his wife Sam and friend / doctor Jack have put on him.
Things I thought could have been better about Awake:
The ending felt rushed. There were several different ways in which this could have ended, the one that was chosen was not the best as I feel it did not resolve Clay as much as I would have liked. (Although him waking up at the end is a fitting final shot).
Overall, a solid thriller that I enjoyed all the way through.
