Review of Avenue Montaigne (2006) by William M — 14 Jul 2007
Avenue Montaigne is about 3 artists (an artist, an actress and a musician) who all come to this cafe where this Amelie-like girl waits on them spreading cheer wherever she goes. I liked the storyline of the 3 artists well enough, but the story felt as if it had been done before and better.
It's worth a watch if you like cute French films that involve characters undergoing life-changes and reinviting themselves through the influence of others. The characters don't feel extremely three-dimensional here, but their relationships with each other are strong and the pacing of the film works fine and is beautifully shot.
There is a middle montage and ending montage scene that work quite well actually. The film seems to succeed, actually, when no characters are speaking, or when that cute little cheer-spreading French girl isn't parading around, and yes, she is very cute.
A worthwhile, if formulaic, French endeavor.
