Review of Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) by Wiscojoe — 30 Apr 2015
The most surprising thing about this movie is how a quarter-of-a-billion dollars can look so average and forgettable on screen. Despite several moments of cheesy humor provided by a scrambling cast of vaudevillians and a few moments of genuine magic, this film never feels particularly super or heroic. It's hard to get invested in a movie about the possible extinction of humanity, when the human characters focus most of their energy on quips and insult humor. This is like the worlds largest, longest, loudest episode of The Big Bang Theory. The only thing missing is the overbearing laugh track, which was sadly not provided by the audience I sat with.
I would recommend bringing along some aspirin, which you might need unless this movie does its intended job of numbing you to core. I left the theater with a headache and the sinking feeling that Disney has once again corrupted powerful mythology into something completely devoid of meaning or cultural import.
