Review of Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) by Everlastall — 08 May 2015
Not a bad movie at all, but probably my least favorite out of all of the marvel franchise. Simply put, way too rushed and way too many plot points, characters and topics covered. The movie never feels like it has a single moment to breathe. Because of this nothing is given the proper attention and time all of it both needs and deserves.
The twins' backstory and motivation? Crammed in super quick. Ultron? Introduced super quick, really should have had more screen time, and then is killed off at the end (I'm really getting sick of Marvel making its villains one-note and killing them off). Thor's side trip vision pool acid trip? Wow...that was very clunky and out of place (I know Whedon was forced to include it, but still, very clunky). Nick Fury just shows up the f**k out of nowhere halfway through. The gem stone stuff I know is important to the Infinity War coming soon, but it's just getting weird and boring and are acting like clunky plot devices/deus ex machinas. And the story's plot just seems to jump from point to point in clunky connection and bad (rushed) exposition (for example Jarvis's hacking of Ultron to prevent the nuclear codes and that scientist quickly introduced just to serve as a plot point later).
This thing really needed a good edit to slash off a couple subplots and characters and focus/spend more time on the really good ideas it had. The talent is all here, but it's just impossible for them to juggle as much as they're trying to here while maintaining the level of quality the smaller more focused single hero Marvel stories do.
