Review of Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) by Vance F — 05 May 2016
One of the most ambitious movies of all time completely deliveries. Whedon weaves a simple but wonderful story about bringing together earth's mightiest heroes.
Each character has his/her moment in the sun that didn't feel forced, but felt naturally fluid. Captain America is less one-dimensional as he was in "The First Avenger," even if he does have to wear a stupid turtleneck. Thor carried forward the maturity from his own movie. Poor Hawkeye is a little undeserved. Robert Downey Jr once again completely nails Tony Stark. Each scene he is in just blossoms with great banter and charisma. The Hulk was perfect. In perfect Whedon style a small story-arc plays an awesome turning point at the end. "What's our secret Dr Banner?" Honestly though, the most impressive performance comes from Hiddleston as Loki. Loki now ranks behind the Joker as an all-time comicbook villain. He's unsympathetic. He's motives are clear. Like a pure villain he's convinced what he is doing is necessary and right. Having a great villain is the key to a great superhero movie. You can tell the villain is perfect when you love and hate him at the same time.
Wrap all this together with incredible action, and a final sequence that will leave you tingling, "The Avengers" is an epic thrill ride that makes every fanboy's fantasy come true. At the end of the day it's ranked up there with "The Dark Knight" as the greatest superhero movie of all-time.
