In the same way that 'Avengers Assemble' was the culmination of Phase 1 of Marvel's cinematic universe, this is the culmination of phase 2 (that began with 'Iron Man 3'), leading into phase 3 (to begin with 'Ant Man').

While certainly enjoyable, however, I felt that it failed to match the lightning-in-a-bottle effect of 'Avengers Assemble', falling slightly short (perhaps) of Captain America 2 as being the best in this phase of films.

The problem (if that's not too strong a word) is in the chief villain: for me, Ultron (for those not in the know: a rogue A.I. accidentally created by Tony Stark. For A.I. experiments never go wrong ... ) is just not as effective/entertaining a villain as Tom Hiddleston's Loki was.

Loki was also not the only other character missing: no Pepper Potts this time round (even if only in a side role), and no Phil Coulson (who is off having his own TV spin-off). I also felt that there was no gags that quite matched Iron Man's 'Shakespeare in the Park' speech:

"Dost thy mother knowest thou wearest her drapes?".

From the first, nor any scene that quite matched Hulk sucker-punching Thor.

For all that, this is *very* enjoyable, with (far) more time given this time round to both Hawkeye and to Black Widow.
