Review of Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) by Edwilled — 28 Dec 2022
James Cameron realised he would never be able to make titanic 2 (since there wasn’t one irl) so he just put it in the third act of his blue people movie The villain is both better and worse here, he should’ve stayed dead, and he should’ve died in the end. But on the other hand his motive was better here, revenge and a kinda sorta son. It feels more personal here which I like.
There’s a lot of moments that were supposed to be impactful that just didn’t land. In the first when the humans burn the whole giant tree and the Navi scream crying we feel it. The closest thing to that here is one where a pseudo whale dies which sucked but I mean dramatic music was playing while it was broad daylight and there was laughing and no negative reaction so it was hard to care if only the music cares if that makes sense. The only death is the least developed character. Four kids was too many, there wasn’t enough time to develop them all. In three hours. A lot of the arcs get halfway done and then just… stop. Which leads me to the main problem.
Sequel bait. The villain lives, arcs only begin, ends on a cliffhanger, the fight of the movie isn’t even done. It’s not it’s own movie. It’s a part one. Pros: it’s pretty and the action sequences are cool and the acting is great and the soundtrack is great and I saw it in 3D which was better than I expected. It’s good but I expect better from James Cameron.
