Review of Avatar (2011) by Kkl10 A — 04 Apr 2014
"You're not in Kansas anymore.. you're on Pandora!".
Sometimes, a film comes along which contains a lot of style and no substance. The film can typically redeem itself by not making itself out to be something that it is not, and instead be appreciated for all its technical achievements.
Unfortunately, that is not the case with Avatar. Although bautifully animated, its grandness is ultimately blunted in the end, as the film clearly wants us only to admire its world. The film also seemingly tries to pull off what 2001: A Space Odyssey did perfectly: tell a story with special effects. It has a long running time, and sadly, it drags on forever.
The acting, while not bad, is by no means impressive. The characters are as shallow as paper, and the villain is laughably cliché. The problem is that the film obviously wants us to hate him by using the cheapest tricks in the book.
The story, as everybody has said already, is one of the most generic, bland, tiresome and overdone stories in film history. Even worse, the film obviously wants to beat us over the head with its generic message. It also seems to think it is incredibly original as a piece of storytelling.
Avatar is, unfortunately a major disappointment. It is a film that was only well received becuse of the hype. James Cameron's talent for taking basic stories and themes and still giving them an original feel like he did in Terminator and Aliens is now gone, replaced by shallow CGI effects.
