Review of Avatar (2011) by Kieran D — 25 Nov 2014
What it lacks in depth it makes up for in arresting visuals and better characters than you usually get from Cameron. Indeed, you can tell this is a passion project, for there is a feeling of love and obsession that permeates the whole.
In short, I went in skeptical and left it impressed. One thing to note. I am fascinated by America's embrace of a movie that sharply criticizes our militarism, materialism, capitalism, and history of manifest destiny.
This is because Americans do not like truth. We like what feels and sounds good. So we can gleefully watch this movie and still carry on. That is the limit of art. It cannot really change society, only do a bit of persuading.
