Review of Avatar (2011) by Will M — 22 Dec 2015
It's been about a year and seven months since Avatar came out and I'd like to revisit my original review. Originally I rated this movie 8.75/10, an exceptionally high rating from me and ranking it amongst the best films I have seen. However, after viewing the film multiple times since then, I can honestly say that having ranked so highly just feels wrong as it is not a favorite candidate.
The main problem with Avatar is that it feels stupid, plain and simple. The main reason why I say this is that the film is filled with cliches, which causes two problems. First, every time a cliche pops out, I can't help but face palm. Second, since the story is filled with cliches, it means that the story is predictable, meaning that what could be two and a half hours of intensity now ends up being two and a half hours of waiting for the ending.
However, I am still entertained by this film and believe that the story, no matter how much of a rip-off it is and how cliche filled it is, has a nice concept behind it. Also, I am doubtful that anyone would contest that the film is visually stunning, which I can safely say elevates its status above all other films that are simply just entertaining. Having gone back, I would have to rate Avatar a 8/10.
