Review of Avalon (2001) by Ed H — 21 Mar 2006
Ambiguity, mood and atmosphere one would expect from Oshii. A beautiful film. Less is more, miramax ruined the film by altering the colours and adding extra dialogue in the U.S. release. Contrary to popular belief this is NOT Oshii's first live action film, but most would agree it's his best.
A much more subtle, tactful approach to The Matrix's imagery and philosophical subject matter, which was largely borrowed from Oshii's 'Ghost in the Shell' anyway.
