As outlandish as their romance is, you find yourself rooting for Gere and Ryder in this bittersweet (if predictable) romance. Both leads are capable in their roles and give well-enough performances, and the supporting cast (LaPaglia and Hennessey) shines.

But the screenplay doesn't make it easy - it is syrupy, predictable and, at times, lazy; the main relationship feels rushed and lopsided, no matter how good Gere and Ryder are. The cinematography is exhilarating, though.

The movie is a valentine to New York and the beauty of the city, and there is always something to look at ... a watchable, but flawed, effort.
