Review of Automata (2014) by Nxrble — 31 Oct 2014

There are so many good notions that seem to be just sitting off the edge of the camera, but nothing of worth happens on screen. I can (and do) suspend belief for good science fiction, but in less than 30 years this is the world as we know it-with insurance companies and a fraction of a fraction of today's population? The acting is wooden, with Melanie Griffith phoning in a performance; you can almost see her reading her lines as if, off-camera, someone was holding cue cards.

What the film does get right is the realistic movement and actions of robots, and the tone of dingy squalor is what the script called for, I'm sure. That humans, even those just three decades from now, are just so absolutely unbelieving of autonomous robotics made me facepalm over and over.
