Review of Automata (2011) by Nathan M — 12 Jan 2015
I don't think there's much new here in terms of ideas, but in the ways that it expresses them, I found Automata to be pretty enjoyable. It can be a little too slow and a little too droll, but director Gabe Ibanez' view of the future kept me invested.
I particularly enjoyed the climax of the film and the way the evolution of a species was talked about. Everyone wants to have their own Blade Runner, and this isn't that, but it's an interesting attempt.
With a pretty great performance from Antonio Banderas, Automata does have a heart and that helps. If the pace could have been sped up a little, and some newer ideas been introduced, Automata could have been pretty great.
In the end, it's still a good sci-fi film, and will be a great introduction for new fans of the genre.
