Review of Auto Focus (2002) by Andrew E — 04 Apr 2009
Greg Kinnear is great in everything and he gives Crane a respectable amount of likability and charm without making him feel contrived, and even though Willem Dafoe proudly shows he can play creepy like no other, this is a messy, uninspired bore.
Schrader has done much, much better--he could've taken the material and made it into a provocative study of sexuality and human interaction with a consistent tone, but instead he makes lousy film with deft equivalent to soft-core pornography with great acting.
