Review of Auto Focus (2002) by Walter M — 11 Feb 2005
Auto Focus has this psycho hip-cool look to it. It's a story from the writer of Raging Bull, American Giggalo and Taxi Driver, Paul Schreider. The film covers the life of 1960s TV star Bob Crane from Hogan's Heroes.
The story covers 1964 to 1978 when he was killed. This is the ultimate character study - I mean you got this character who is this big TV star, everybody loves this guy and then you got the flip side of this guy, this pyscho-sexual addict who just can't stop.
With his friend John Carpenter, the two go on a torrid sex spree, filming various chicks giving them blowjobs, one-on-one sex scenes and eventually orgies. Their catch phrase - "A day without sex is a day wasted," is almost the theme of the movie.
I mean, yes it's a story about this guy who has these good intentions of succeeding in show biz, but unfortunately finds his way down the wrong path. The final 10 minutes of this film are shot beautifully.
The final scene, the murder is very reminescent of Taxi Driver when de Niro caps the one dude tryin to get some action from Jodie Foster's ho character, you know, that spray of blood on the wall. Also, the acting is excellent in this film, the degeneration of the Bob Crane character is played with extreme finesse by Greg Kinnear, a man who has appeared in more movies with naked chicks in recent history.
A very cool, disturbing and taut film. Check it out!!
