Review of Autism: The Musical (2007) by Todd S — 10 Aug 2008
This documentary had a lot to offer, but sadly it was poorly structured. The movie was structured to be ostensibly about the children with autism themselves, but the movie's focus was drawn perpetually to the parents of children with autism.
Granted, there will be some overlap, but the movie should have focused on the adults: they were the more engaging documentary subjects, they were more able to speak about their experiences, and the musical was as much for them as it was for their children.
This is not to say that the children's role should have been minimized: I just don't think this documentary was long enough. I definitely wanted more about the parents.
