Australia is a good film, not a great one. It is also a frustrating one at points. First of all, its runtime is 2 hours and 45 minutes, making the longest film I have seen in 2008. Now I?m not bothered by runtimes of films but with this it feel longer at points, and that doesn?t help by the ?false endings? in the film, the parts where it reaches a point where it feels like the end and then it continues.

Also frustrating was Nicole Kidman?s acting in the beginning of the film, it did feel forced and ridiculous so it didn?t give me a good impression that I was going to like this film. However, the more it progressed, the more I enjoyed it with it?s layered story-telling (ranging from western to romance to war), it?s stunning cinematography and direction by Baz Luhrman and it?s great performances by Hugh Jackman, David Wenham and Kidman who improves throughout.

Overall Australia is an enjoyable film, and if the runtime doesn?t bother you, it?s worth checking out though it doesn?t reach the heights of epic status it means to be.
