Review of Australia (2008) by Colin D — 11 May 2011
Sweeping, epic, romantic, and old-fashioned in the best way. Soo wonderful and soo underrated.
Australia is a movie's movie. It doesn't try to recreate our own reality, it creates the one we all wished we lived in. It exists in a heightened reality where every emotion is the biggest emotion, romantic feelings aren't just feelings they are eternal, undying feelings of love and every shot isn't just a shot, it is the most gorgeous crane shot or dolly shot you've ever seen. Everything from the scenery to the actors, to the score is stunningly beautiful. The movie is long, but it goes by quickly enough if you just let yourself get swept up in it. This is a movie where the price tag actually seems justified because it actually feels as expensive as it was. And I mean that in a compliment, because it has everything in it that a movie should have.
I went in thinking it would look nice but would be long and dull... and couldn't be more surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
