Review of Australia (2008) by Connor B — 05 Jul 2011
Moulin Rouge is one of my favourite movies so an over the top Baz Luhrmann flick is something I look forward to. Australia however, just didn't cut it for me. Yes I liked it but I didn't love it, and I have put it down to two reasons.
The first is Hugh Jackman (apologies to wife). A little too pretty and nice for the part which would have been much better suited to Russell Crowe, who I believe had the role originally. I definitely didn't feel the love between the two main characters as well, which really took away from the whole experience.
The second is the CGI was a bit obvious in parts, and in others it was too crisp and over produced. It just didn't blend in as it should. The cows almost stampeding over the cliff for example, was one scene that really suffered as a result.
Otherwise the story was a winner, great acting by most and I thought the Wizard of Oz motif worked a treat.
Whack in Russell and throw in a bit of grit and you've got a winner!
