Review of Australia (2008) by Kathryn M — 15 Jan 2012
This was a bit of an odd movie. It couldn't quite make up it's mind as to what it was. At first, it starts dramatic (beginning with a warning to the aborigine people that they may hear names or see images of their dead and then a statement of the Lost Generations), with a young aborigine boy talking about finding his place.
It then switches to Nicole Kidman's character and the movie turns into some funky comedy (Kangaroos! Beautiful kangaroos! Jumping!), with melodramatic romantic beginnings. It then begins switching to a war/history drama with romance, and the occasional dreamy bit.
I found it interesting because it introduced me to more of Australia's history, bits that I hadn't really known about. The movie was entertaining, but I can't say it was great. It just couldn't determine how it was going to tell the story.
