Review of Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002) by Will B — 10 May 2014
"Austin Powers in Goldmember" has some very amusing pieces, but is let down overall by it's heavy reliance on gross-out humour - perhaps moreso than it's two predecessors.
Mike Myers takes on a 4th character in this threequel, playing the title role of Goldmember - a character that even looks disgusting in comparison to Fat Bastard, which is no mean feat.
But the same jokes repeat themselves over and over again, and the supporting cast that includes Verne Troyer, Seth Green, Michael York, Robert Wagner and series newcomers Beyonce Knowles and Michael Caine, doesn't do enough to temper Myers' over-the-top style.
However, the "film within a film", featuring cameos from Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito, Steven Spielberg and John Travolta, is a classic bit of 4th wall breaking filmmaking, and one of my favourite Powers scenes. So there is that.
An average comedy.
