Review of August Underground's Penance (2007) by Liam J — 26 Nov 2008
Mordum is probably the dirtiest film I have ever seen and with the release of penance I felt this dark seedy side of myself giggle in masochistic joy as I was in for yet another night with my head in the toilet watching some of the fowlest images ever shot. There is one big difference between part 2 and 3 and thats quality, Fred has shot this on Digital rather than the old 8mm(classic) style. I can see why he did this though, in this new age if you found an old vhs quality video of two killers on a spree of terror you would shrug it off and squint at what exactly is going on in the frame. Penance is not the case, you see everything in digital, and you may think, oh, thats nice, but the more detail the worse off the viewer is, and I respect this bold move.
Somehow between Mordum and Penance I feel that Vogal has gone a little soft on us, I remember Sitting drunk on the couch with a few friends watching a scene where three women are spewing on eachother and making a man cut his own penis off. We had to turn it off, For the first time since Roald Dalhs Witches I had to turn a film off because it was too much. Where Penance has it's moments like the home intrusion scene on Christmas, it falls short, with everything Mordum had, this lacks, don't get me wrong though, its good pulse racing fun but its just a little dry.
