Review of August Underground (2001) by Heather K — 26 Apr 2008

Well it takes an awful lot for me to actually hate a film, but here I am, and here it is. This is one of the worst films I've ever seen, and I don't mean bad in a good way. It appears to be shot on a home camcorder, and scenes in shot while they are driving were so shaky they were nearly impossible to watch without sea sickness. Speaking of sickness, if you came to this film thinking it would be disgusting or disturbing, it's actually not or at least not in the way you are thinking most likely.

The film starts off with the only impressive effect it has as we watch the camera man and his obnoxious rockabilly loser friend bothering a girl they kidnapped in the basement. See they must have been torturing her for a while now as we can see one of her nipples is removed and actually they did a good job of making this look realistically gross. The torture we get to see is mainly piss and shit related which is gross don't get me wrong, it's just plain pointless and sadistic. We also get to note that they kidnapped her boyfriend and chopped him up but we don't really get to see much of that.

From there seriously there are shots of a party with a band covering "Blind" by Korn, annoying driving shots, self indulgent shots with hookers and some sort of variety store torture heist. Basically whatever they happened to be doing those days I get the feeling they filmed, threw it together and tried to sauce it up with blood and piss. Aside from the fact that the actual quality of the film is nil, it's the actors which make it unbearable. They laugh and make really stupid jokes throughout, and all I could think about was how if I met those guys in real life I'd have a hard time not punching them out.

There are some plain disgusting gore movies which I do like and I would say are worthwhile, but this one is a total crapper. Avoid at all costs no matter how "sick" people tell you this is.
