Review of August Rush (2007) by Jonathan P — 13 Oct 2010
I watched this film while doing the laundry and kept one ear open for dialogue when I wasn't in the room with the TV that was playing it. Had I been sitting still while watching it, I would have given it one star for effort.
But, alas, two stars are deserved because I was productive while watching the film. Robin Williams' disastrous performance killed the film, adding a dimension to the story that should have either been left out all together or relieved of wondering by alluding to the character's obvious mental illness(es).
The film really showed great promise but offered no plausibility. The kid was a prodigy but too bad the writer/director wasn't. This film was everywhere but on point. Just when I began to care for a character, the odd performance by Myers' character's band flashback came along to make me question his entire place in the film.
Myers' character's progress in the film with his music career is undefined, unnecessary, and totally contrived. The message was (I think) important, however, in that...well...music rocks. Good effort, but a jigsaw puzzle of un-epic proportions.
