Review of August Rush (2007) by Luke R — 31 Dec 2012
I wanted this to be so much more. In the end, I enjoyed the roles of both Jonathon Rhys-Meyers and Keri Russell - and even the small part played by Terrence Howard, but the rest left something to be desired.
And I'm sorry, but I just couldn't believe Freddie Highmore playing August Rush. I understand the movie is a work of fiction, but please. They lost me when the kid went crazy with sheet music when the little girl went to school. Not bad for someone who had never seen a note before in his life (unless there's something I missed?).
They also never showed him actually play an instrument for any great amount of time, which was frustrating and added to the problems I encountered with this movie as I didn't believe he was the one playing it.
Also, the knowledge that this kid is voicing Astro Boy (2009 release) worries me greatly.
Sadly, the ending wasn't the payoff I was hoping for either. Again, I liked parts of this movie but as a whole, it just didn't work for me.
