Review of August: Osage County (2013) by Steven B — 26 Feb 2014
OK, this is a hard one. A lot of the Old Geezers Who Go To The Matinee Alone showed up to see Meryl Streep and mostly they stayed. I have to say that Streep, Julia Roberts, and Margo Matindale deliver Oscar worthy performances. The rest of the cast is almost as good in this depiction of an extremely dysfunctional family in Oklahoma. Meryl Streep's role is the center of the move as the drug addicted, foul mouthed, unloveable and unloving matriarch. Ms Roberts plays the elder daughter caught in the trap of becoming the mother she hates.
OK, great performances and good direction and at times great photography, but I almost walked out and was really glad when it was over. None of these people are at all sympathetic or even pitiful; they are lousy human beings and deserve all the suffering. . .ok, that's a bit overboard but you get my point. This is a very difficult movie to watch and other than the great acting it has nothing to recommend it. Go at your peril.
