Review of August: Osage County (2013) by Daniel V — 16 Sep 2014
Sometimes August tries to be so good and so deep and so twisty that it weighs itself down. Sometimes there is just too much going on. And then there's August: Osage County. Two powerhouse performances make this something to see.
Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts completely dwarf the fine performances by their very capable and noteworthy co-stars. Aside from that there's too many reveals on top of one another the audience may lose track.
Based on play, it seems better suited for the stage. In fact, I really wish I would've seen it there first. However, the flaws are just as dwarfed by Julia Roberts best performance since Erin Brokobitch.
That's high praise from someone who really doesn't get Julia. Except in Hook, I love her Tinker Bell. And what can I say about Meryl Streep that hasn't been said. The woman continues to solidify her place at the top of her craft.
