Review of Audition (2000) by Renaldo P — 01 Sep 2010
What makes Takashi Miike tick? The subtlety of gore as an art-form? The slow, almost lethargic narration? Or maybe, the gradual descent into madness? I think it's a bit of everything.
"Audition" leaves many questions unanswered. But what is it really trying to show? That beauty and lust can devour you completely. That the psychotic tendencies of the human mind can be very real.
If you have watched "Ichi the Killer", then you can be prepared for what this unusual Japanese film-maker has to offer. If you haven't, then you might as well watch it unprepared. You'll either love it or hate it totally!
