Review of Audition (2000) by Toronto D — 17 Oct 2009
The poster was the reason I decided to see this film (very nice artwork), apart from what I've heard that it's one of the most shocking/scarry movies made.
Well, it's nothing like that. The first hour sets the story for a man which is looking for a new girlfriend through a movie audition hosted by his friend. Nothing scarry here, not even something new, just a man searching for a partner in love who is as hurt as he is.
SPOILERS:
The next ~30 minutes centers on discovering new things and secrets about the girl. As he's getting closer he finds that she was abused by the ballet teacher, then by her stepfather etc.
The end, the last 20 minutes or so it's a torture scene. Nothing too graphic or something so disturbing you may puke, we see more gore in the Saw series. Plus some flashbacks to understand that it was all a dream, a perception of the man about the girl (I read this on another site). There is also a scene with her sitting by the phone which is kinda' creepy.
But to classify this movie as disturbing, scarry or even horror it's wrong. If it lasted only 20 minutes you could say it's some kind of horror/gore film. Until that point it's nothing spectacular and the last part doesn't transform Audition into something different.
6/10.
