Review of Audition (2000) by Mickey F — 11 Jul 2009
After hearing about this movie for as long as I did I was expecting something really unique and special in this film, but like Miikes other film Ichii The Killer I found myself underwhelmed at the end.
Most horror movies rely on some sort of twist or special trick to create a feeling of suspense in the audience (the phone call came from inside the house!, watch the movie and die in seven days, the hotel wants you to kill your kid ect.
) but this movie had nothing. From the first scene we know the girl is insane, then the main characters close friends spend the next forty minutes warning him that this chick is insane, so by the time she actually starts carving the dude up the audience is like "FINALLY! Jesus I thought it would never happen!" Playing the girl as a worldclass fuckup right from the start takes all of the scare out of the scary movie, and unlike movies like Hostel or Saw you dont even get a sick thrill in seeing a man put through a cheese grater or anything because the "Gore" is pretty stale and boring by todays standards.
Looking back I am lowering this review by another star because I am finding it hard to justify three. If you have a PASSION for Jap horror and must see everything then I recommend it, if not then you should just rent The Thing and view a real horror movie.
