Review of Audition (2000) by Kevin S — 16 Nov 2009
It's a cult film that you endure rather than enjoy. The final sequence is truly disturbing and completely at odds with everything that has come before. Much of the imagery in the final half hour is disembodied from the hero and presented as reveries, possibilities or alternate events separate from the reality of the character's journey.
It seems designed to purposefully make no sense just for the added shock effect. We do understand the horrible upbringing that drives the girl to love torture porn, but after following the man for most of the film, we don't think him deserving of such abuse that she inflicts.
There is no true ending to this sordid film, just the merciful credits.
