Review of Audition (2000) by Josh D — 03 Apr 2010
Really surprising. It's hard to talk about a film like this. For the first hour, you're lured into the sense of the main character's life and what he really wants, all the while feeling something sinister brewing beneath the surface.
Long takes and relative normalcy are common for this part. Then things get creepy and a big event happen, and all of a sudden the story turns intense and confusing. It's all very effective however, and this relative sense of false security that's shattered hits you like a train wreck.
The story is a little weird and jarring at times, but it resolves itself in an appropriate manner. I suspect that the drawn-out, pain-inducing sequence near the end will be too much for most viewers to handle, but it is truly disturbing and I guarantee that the antagonist's chirpy whispers will haunt me when I try to sleep tonight.
Not much bad to say about this, actually, as I thought the pacing was masterful and the direction truly original. Some parts of the story are repeated one too many times, but they aren't deal-breakers.
Original and disturbing stuff.
