Review of Audition (2000) by Brody M — 12 Jul 2010
Miike's Audition would have you believe it is a romance movie...up until the ten minute torture sequence, that is. Then it's just all blood, guts, and laughter in the best (and worst) possible ways.
This is the sort of go-for-broke violence that doesn't seem to have any place or purpose at first but then really does. Abso-frigging-lutely. And I approve wholeheartedly. Audition is a near pitch-perfect film.
It lulls its audience into a false sense of security, and then shows the audience how false that sense was by cutting off someone's foot. Thanks, Miike. You rule.
