Review of Au Hasard Balthazar (1966) by A B — 04 Nov 2005
Au hasard Balthazar is a heartbreaking tale of a mistreated donkey, and the people around him. From the Bresson films that I have experience, he tends to show little or no emotion through the characters. One of the beauties of the film is that it shows the sins of the world, the bad that people do, and builds up, what I believe to be all the emotions that Bresson had the characters bottle up in themselves, and releases it in the extremely devestating, and powerful final scene. Schubert's beautiful piano sonata coupled with the films images, is perfect. I'm 100% sure that I didn't catch a great deal of what Bresson was trying to represent; what I interpreted from the film may be right or wrong, but in repeated viewings, I hope to understand, and gain more out of Au hasard Balthazar.
Final Rating: 100/100.
