Review of Au Hasard Balthazar (1966) by Dan L — 27 Nov 2007
It is interesting to see that another poster qualified the very point I was going to mention about Bresson in general and "Au Hasard Balthazar" in particular. Bresson was a sort of "microbiologist" of film art, human nature & the so-called " condition" of it.
If you feel something when you watch one of his films there is a good chance he wanted you to feel it. When the man manipulates, it is not cheap or trivial; the mirror doesn't flatter...how many can claim that they are not, at least occasionally, "going through the motions" in life? Bresson's "models" make explicit both through the "acting" and by the suggestion of the manipulation of the stationary object.
