Review of Au Hasard Balthazar (1966) by Kate H — 22 Jun 2008
I really loved this movie, but it's very sad and the characters aren't very well developed so you never understand their motivation. The only character I could really relate to or empathize with was Balthazar but the abuse he suffers is so relentless and heartbreaking that I was choked up in pretty much every scene he was in and felt more and more disgusted by the humans in his life.
The final scene, with Balthazar in the field surrounded by all of the sheep was totally heartbreaking and did get a few sobs out of me, but it's just so touching and meaningful that it's worth all the tears.
A truly beautiful film.
